Dirty Detour is an adventure inspired gravel biking weekend for the whole family with the perfect party to ride combo.

With something for the whole family from camping by an open fire, luxury cabin accommodation, horse riding, walking trails, spotting platypus in the pristine Upper Karuah River or riding one of the three course options — all finished off with a beverage and music around the open fire with a bunch of great people.

  • This short ride circles the rolling hills of the Monkerai Valley before heading back to Riverwood Downs for the after party. This route is suitable to all riders with moderate fitness capable of cycling 20KM on gravel roads.

    On route you will experience the glorious gravel roads, numerous river crossings, scenic farm vistas with a backdrop of the World Heritage Barrington Tops, a few climbs to let you know your still alive and several exhilarating descents.

    This route is suitable for riders with moderate fitness and skill level capable of cycling 50km off road.

    You will start with the rolling gravel roads of the Monkerai Valley before heading up toward the hills on some more challenging forestry trails. This course will take you into some pristine forestry with creek crossings and a fair dose of challenges.

    Are looking for a little more than your regular gravel ride? then this 90km burner is for you. No shortage of challenges, you will be beyond stoked when you earn your finishers beer!

    90KM—1600VM

    A time cut is in place for this course. Riders who cannot make the time cut will be directed on to the 50km course to finish the ride, which will result in a total of 78km. The time cut is crucial to ensure all riders finish in daylight hours.

    This course gets all the stupendous rolling gravel roads with a nice mix of double track and stem chewing climbs, topped off with a dose of white knuckle, eye blurring descents. Many have asked “What’s the perfect bike?”, that’s up to you but something with 40+mm tyres will be the order of the day.

    The course will take you out of Monkerai and up in to the Avon State Forest before some quick descents have you rolling through the Monkerai Valley and awaiting the big daddy of Trevor Tops climb. With the spectacular views you will forget you’re even climbing ;-). After the main climb of the day, you can enjoy 15kms of descending through rainforests to rest the legs for the roll back into Monkerai. A few final climbs and descents will have you primed for the after party.

    This route is only suitable for riders with high level fitness and skill level capable of cycling 100km off road in tough terrain. This course has over 1800vm of climbing and is suggested gravel bikes with 40mm+ tyres or mountain bikes are used

    Where is Dirty Detour Monkerai?

    Dirty Detour is being run in the pristine Monkerai Valley NSW located in the foothills of the World Heritage Barrington Tops. The event centre & accommodation are at ‘Riverwood Downs’ a 750 acres property directly on the Upper Karuah River. – link to website. Monkerai is under 3 hours from Sydney and 1.5 hours from Newcastle

    Do I need insurance?

    AusCycling Insurance is compulsory for all riders. During registration you will be asked to provide a valid AusCycling membership number.

    If you are not a member, please go to https://www.auscycling.org.au/membership/lifestyle, lifestyle memberships are available for the event.

    There is also the option to join as a free trial member. Free Trial Memberships are available to anyone who has not held an AusCycling (AC) membership in the last 3 years. https://www.auscycling.org.au/membership/other/free-trial

    Proof of valid insurance will be required at registration on the day, before you can ride.

    Are there on course rest stops?

    Yes. Rest stops will be present on all courses and stocked with water and snacks.

    The 20km ride will have a station approximately half way
    The 50 km course will have 2 stations at approximately 8kms and 20kms
    The 90km course will have 2 stations at approximately 45kms and 60kms

    What bike to ride?

    Gravel, mountain or eMtb are required. E-Bikes are more than welcome; however, battery range should be considered if you’re looking at the 90km course. Tyre selection will be critical for gravel bikes with some sections of the 90km course being quite rough, steep and challenging. Slicks are best left on the shelf for this one, with 40+mm tyres being the best option. Road bikes are not suitable for this event!

    What equipment is recommended?

    Appropriate Gravel, Mountain or E-Mountain Bike in good working order, Australian Standards approved helmet is mandatory, Spares kit including: tube, pump or CO2 cylinders, phone, bike multi-tool, fluids – bottles or camelbacks, food, appropriate footwear, sun cream. All riders should be prepared to be self sufficient.

    Is the ride on public roads? Can I ride the course before or after the event?

    Yes the event is on open public roads, and NSW road rules will apply at all times. Please note the 50km & 90km course does access private property & can only be ridden in full during the event as we have exclussive access to the property. Please respect the local land owners so we can continue coming back.

    Can I stay there?

    Yes. Bunkhouse rooms are available Friday and Saturday (bookings via event ticketing page), Camping and Cabins are available on site at Riverwood Downs Ph 1800 809 772

    Is there food and coffee available?

    Yes, coffee will be available from early Saturday & Sunday morning. Volunteers will be on the BBQ all day Saturday & Sunday morning. Post ride food & dinner will be available at the event centre on Saturday afternoon/evening, consisting of wood fired pizzas, or slow cooked smoked meats.
    Alternatively the on-site restaurant ‘Barrington Bar & Grill’ is open Friday & Saturday night for sit down meals, Bookings are required.

    The after party!!!

    Open Fire, Live Music, Craft Beer, Wine and good times! The local legends at The TinShed Brewery will be serving up a storm at the bar for all the tired bodies to sit around relaxing by the campfire.

    Tin Shed will be serving their specialty craft beer with a one-off specialty event beer just for Dirty Detour which will be labelled with our very own limited-edition branding. A variety of local wines and cider will be available, along with soft drinks.

    Event Schedule

    Pre ride registration will be open on the Friday evening at Riverwood Downs, Book a Bunkhouse room and come hang out by the fire.

    On Saturday morning registration will open at 7.30am at Event HQ Riverwood Downs, 90km ride starts at 8.40am, 50km ride starts at 10.45am and the 20km at 11.45am. All rides are scheduled in a manner to have riders finish after lunch with plenty of time to enjoy the after party.

    What does my entry get me?

    Your entry gets you an organised event with a marked and marshalled course, on course feed stations, first aid support, mechanical support, limited edition calico bag, finishers beverage thanks to our partners the TinShed Brewery, music and a licensed after party, & entry into a lucky door prize draw thanks to our ride partners.

    Are there age restrictions?

    Yes. The minimum age for:

    20km course is 10 years old. Riders aged 10 to 14 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
    50km course is 12 years old. Riders aged 12 to 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
    90km course is 16 years old

    Note on Ages: We have set the ages to reflect the standard of ability to safely participate in the event. If your child is experienced then we can give special consideration. Please contact us at info@dirtydetour.com.au to seek permission to enter children under the age category. Please note a small amount of traffic will be present on some sections of the course.

    What is the refund policy?

    Tickets are non-refundable, ride transfers are avialable to future events. If you have extenuating circumstances please contact us at info@dirtydetour.com.au. If the event manager approves a refund, they will be subject to a 10% processing fee.

    What is the COVID policy if the event is cancelled?

    In the event of cancellation due to COVID-19, the event will be rescheduled, and all registered riders will have their race registration moved to the new event date.

    If for reasons beyond the Event Organisers control the event does not take place at all in 2023 or beyond (including reasons relating to COVID-19), all registered riders will have their race registrations refunded.

    Can I volunteer?

    Not ready to ride the course but still want to be part of the excitement of Dirty Detour? Volunteering is a great way to experience our events, meet new people and have fun along the way. It is the result of hard working volunteers that add to the event’s success and help create a safe and enjoyable experience for participants. So, get involved and help our riders safely make it to the after party.

    All volunteers receive a FREE event tee, water and food supplies.
